Size Does Not Matter – Large Institutions as Part of Vibrant Communities

A project to promote inclusion and community through community-based care and support institutions

Why this project?

Care and support institutions are a central part of supporting older adults. In large cities, however, they often appear as isolated islands. Yet social participation is a human right – at any age.

Our Vision

Even large institutions can become vibrant places of encounter when they are consciously integrated into their surroundings. The decisive factor is not the size – but the concept.

Project Goals

We are developing a concept to better integrate large institutions into their neighborhoods. The goals are:

  • Social exchange: enabling encounters and strengthening community.
  • Promote inclusion: participation of all population groups and breaking down prejudices.
  • Leverage collaboration: networking with local organizations and using existing resources.
  • Increase quality of life: shaping an environment that meets the needs of all generations.

Approach and Methods

The basis is a social space analysis at each project site. It helps to identify needs and potentials in the surrounding area and to develop targeted strategies.

Architecture and Surroundings

  • Open, accessible spaces such as cafés, gardens, event rooms
  • Accessibility and mobility for everyone
  • Inviting transitions between institution and neighborhood

Target Group Specific Offers

  • Community events: e.g., cultural festivals, workshops, markets
  • Educational programs: readings, lectures, intergenerational formats
  • Services: lunch table, room rental, physical activity offerings
  • Volunteer work: mutual support, e.g., repair cafés or tutoring

Collaboration with Local Partners

  • Cooperation with schools, kindergartens, churches, clubs, police, and companies
  • Joint projects such as neighborhood gardens or art actions
  • Building support networks for people with high care needs, e.g., dementia

Good Practices

The project builds on successful examples:

  • Generational projects like „Young Living“ or „All-In Clubs“
  • Neighborhood festivals with active participation of all
  • Art and culture projects that enable participation

Next Steps: Start Model Projects

Together with project partners from Europe, we will develop pilot projects at one location each. The goal is a transferable concept that can also serve as a template for other cities and organizations. Does your institution in an urban area have similar goals?

Become a project partner!

We, the Häuser zum Leben, are a non-profit operator of 30 care and support institutions with 9,000 places and 120 pensioners‘ clubs in Vienna. We want to learn from each other with partners from other European cities and develop new concepts. The project will be submitted to the EU Commission for co-financing as part of the ESN network.
